Your Questions: Security, Safety and Redundancy

How secure is Vonage? That's a common question from customers and prospective customers alike.

It makes sense that many business leaders still worry about the security of hosted or "cloud" services. Last year, 76% of U.S. companies experienced a cyberattack, up from 55% in 2016, according to the Ponemon Institute. As enterprise cloud services become increasingly sophisticated, so do the hacking techniques and the frequency of attacks.

But so does the Vonage fraud detection system.

Vonage has implemented industry-leading, real-time fraud detection services to ensure your calls stay private, your data stays safe, and your company only pays for the calls you actually make.

Cloud Communications — Benefits and Risks

Cloud communications platforms are more scalable and reliable than traditional phone service. They provide omnichannel communication options and can be integrated with customer relationship management (CRM) and other key business systems to improve your customer service, sales and marketing, and the overall customer experience.

Yet, despite all the benefits of cloud communications, security risks need to be monitored, managed, and mitigated. Unless your solution includes robust encryption and a real-time fraud detection system, hackers can eavesdrop on your conversations, intercept your calls, use your system to make their own calls (sticking you with the bill), and launch other attacks that put your business and customer data at risk.

Vonage Real-Time Fraud Detection System

Vonage takes security very seriously. As chief information security officer, Sanjay Macwan, put it, "Cybersecurity and cloud security are baked into the culture of our business and at Vonage, we lead by example."

That starts with having a secure, reliable platform. "Vonage provides industry-leading information and cybersecurity measures designed from the bottom up for a cloud-based environment, without any compromise to security or cloud reliability," said Macwan. "This includes informational guidance and enablement for compliance and regulation guidelines, such as HIPAA, HITECH and HITRUST to address privacy regulatory requirements for our healthcare customers, PCI for protection of financial data, and global privacy standards through General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)."

In a nutshell, the fraud detection system keeps your hosted communications humming along without any need for you to monitor or configure security settings.

Layered onto the platform are a variety of real-time fraud detection APIs that monitor your traffic and block fraudulent attempts to access your system. Here's how the fraud detection system works:

  1. Your app, chatbot, virtual receptionist, or live operator requests a customer's phone number when they set up an account or initiate a high-value transaction.

  2. Your app sends the number to the Vonage Number Insight API, which returns real-time insights about the phone number — including whether it's valid and reachable, whether it's a virtual number or landline, whether the number has previously been associated with hacking or fraud, and other key security intelligence.

  3. Your risk-scoring engine analyzes the data from Number Insight and raises possible alerts. If the number seems suspicious, the system triggers step-up verification.

  4. The Vonage Verify API sends an SMS with a single-use verification code for the customer. If the user can't supply the correct code, they get blocked.

This fraud detection system runs continuously in every cluster of the Vonage Business Cloud and automatically identifies likely fraud based on a number of factors, down to specific phones and accounts. Then it quickly and automatically blocks any in-progress fraud attempts and changes the phone credentials, without your involvement and without charging you for the call. No muss, no fuss, and, most importantly, no fraud.
